WHAT TYPES OF POWER GENERATOR ARE AVAILABLE?

Generators are the go-to power source for many situations, with different types available depending on the level of power required.

SINGLE AND THREE PHASE GENERATORS

Single-phase generators produce a single voltage that alternates continuously. Because the power is generated in one single wave, the level varies throughout its cycle. These varying waves cause the power level to rise and fall throughout the process, although this may not be obvious.

Three-phase generators work by producing three separate waves of AC power that operate in a sequence, so there is always a continuous flow of energy and the power level never dips as it does with single-phase generators. It makes them much more powerful.

For smaller operations, single-phase generators provide an efficient source at a lower cost, but where greater power is required, different types of generator come into their own.

IT’S ALL IN THE NUMBERS

Three-phase generators offer a 415V output, sometimes with 230V outputs tapping off the phases. Single-phase generators offer 230V and/or 110V outputs.

Dual-voltage generators are typically 230/110V output. Better-designed machines offer both voltages at the same time, rather than having to switch between them.

Multi-voltage generators offer 415/230/110V all from the same machine.

POWER SOURCES

The number of phases and power levels aren’t the only difference between generator models. You’ll also need to choose between power sources such as petrol and diesel. See here for details.

BRANDS AND RANGES
There are many models and brands of power generators on the market to suit different needs and budgets. Like with most purchases it is advisable to choose the best build quality you can.

Established brands have a heritage and a track record of delivering products that work well, which is why they are still with us. They also have the back-up support network with qualified engineers to provide peace of mind.

MAKING A CHOICE
Some differences in brands and ranges are more obvious than others.

It’s worth taking time to see the generators in action if possible, examining the technical specifications, comparing their costs and qualities with competitor brands and considering how they meet your needs.

An experienced salesperson can take you through the different options to help you make the right choice.

If you’re not clear on what type of generator would best suit your needs, the team at Morris Site Machinery can advise and help you.
